Accompanied by co pilot Captan WGR Hinchliffe, they aimed also to be the first to fly the Atlantic from east to west. The story of Elsie Mackay, daughter of Lord Inchcape of Glenapp, is vividly told in this book published by 2QT Publishing. Elsie was born into wealth but wasn’t satisfied with living a life of privilege. She first defied her powerful father, who was the chairman of P&O, by becoming an actress in early silent cinema and eloping with an army captain she met during World War One. It was during this time that she also discovered her love of flight. She became a serious aviator, buying her own plane and regularly flying home to Scotland. She was determined to become the first woman not only to fly the Atlantic but also in a direction – east to west – that yet to be achieved by either gender.

Elsie’s story captures the energy of the 1920s, the extraordinary technological changes, and the ambition to break records and defy the odds. The book places her aims in the context of the times, and describes her working relationship with another extraordinary character of early aviation – Captain W G R Hinchliffe.

West Over the Waves is included here as it is the first book written by the owner of Foggie Toddle Books, Jayne Baldwin.
