Second Sands Publishing

In 2020 Foggie Toddle Books acquired the company Second Sands Publishing from artist and illustrator Pauline Paterson of Thistle Heart Prints. Foggie Toddle owner Jayne Baldwin wished to create an imprint in order to be able to facilitate the publishing of books beyond the children’s market. Jayne uses the imprint to publish poetry, prose, non-fiction and reissuing books that have gone out of print.

In June 2020 Jayne launched the revamped Second Sands Publishing with her own book The Wrecking of the Orion, written during lockdown and an offshoot from her research for a book about the lighthouses of Dumfries and Galloway that she’s working on with her friend Pauline Paterson. In the same year she announced an agreement with author Donna Brewster to reissue her popular book The House that Sugar Built, which, after being hampered by the effects of the pandemic, was launched at the Wigtown Book Festival in September 2023.

At the start of 2021 Jayne began a collaboration with award-winning writer Des Dillon and Galloway printer Helen Morley of the Wigtown Press to produce a chapbook of poetry and drawings. The result, Daily Bread, a collection of nine poems and six pen & ink drawings was published at the beginning of May 2021 and is now available to order in the Foggie Toddle website shop. A full collection of poetry by Des Dillon, Muscle Work, Alcohol, & Blame was launched at the Wigtown Book Festival in September of that year and is also available to order from the website shop. The collection has been highly praised. Poet Charlie Gracie described it as a balance of toughness with delicacy and “yearning with intimacy.” Joyce MacMillan of The Scotsman said Dillon is ‘one of the most remarkable writers in Scotland.”

Second Sands has also reissued Jayne’s book Mary Timney, The Road to the Gallows which was originally published by Clayhole Publishing. The new edition features a wonderful illustration by Helen Morley.
