Pupils at Wigtown Primary School welcome Shona the Vet
Children across Scotland have been welcoming copies of Shona the Vet into their school. This delightful picture book, published last year by Foggie Toddle Books, has been sent to every primary school in Scotland this week as part of a project organised by Futurevets-Scotland. The charity is led by Dr Karen Gardiner who aims to promote and enable a clear pathway for anyone wishing to become a vet.
Shona the Vet was written and illustrated by Catherine Stables who has been a working vet for more than 20 years in Moray. She had the idea of creating a picture book that would entertain children whilst also telling them about Scotland’s wildlife and the issues they face. Catherine is now working on a second book featuring Shona, her wee dog Jock and their trusty red helicopter which is how they travel across the magnificent landscape of Scotland’s mainland and it’s many islands. The first book was A Coast to Coast Adventure, whilst the second focuses on animals in towns and cities.
Publisher Jayne Baldwin went along to her local primary school in Wigtown, Scotland’s National Booktown where her bookshop and publishing company is based, to meet pupils with their copy of the book.
“It’s been such an exciting initiative to be part of and I hope reading about Shona helps to encourage children to consider a future career as a vet, or veterinary nurse. The books also highlight the difficulties faced by wild animals in our modern world,” Jayne said.
