Second Sands Publications was a small publishing company owned and run by artist and illustrator Pauline Paterson producing two books for children, The Trail of the Pointy Toed Pyjama Thief and Boo! Where Are You, a very popular fun title for the under-fives. When Pauline decided to restructure her business Foggie Toddle owner Jayne Baldwin was able to acquire the Second Sands list and Second Sands has now become an imprint of Foggie Toddle Books.
Jayne will now be using the imprint for the publication of new non-fiction titles including the book she’s working on with Pauline about the lighthouses of south west Scotland. Whilst researching the lighthouses of Portpatrick, Jayne came across the story of a shipwreck just outside the harbour of this small village. Realising that in June 2020 it would be 170 years since the disaster, Jayne decided to try and mark the 170th anniversary by producing what she imagined would be a short pamphlet on the wrecking of the paddlesteamer. Instead, her research led her into the extraordinary story of how this ship sank in minutes, taking more than 50 people with her and the resulting trial of the officers in charge. The book arrived from the printer, J&B Print of Newton Stewart, just in time for the anniversary on the 18th of June.
